Case Studies - Planning Inspectorate Intranet
Planning Inspectorate Intranet
Overview
- Development of intranet with customer needs and accessiblity as the main project drivers;
- 4 team members;
- 125 publishers; &
- Duration; 24 Months.
The Problem
The starting point for the project was a three year old intranet with 250,000 files and 125 publishers all responsible for their own section of the intranet. The intranet project was realised to improve publishing standards, improve ease of use and to ensure that it met the variety of customer/user needs. From the outset it was clear that the intranet at the Planning Inspectorate was a powerful tool with a real business use but the benefits had not been fully realised because usability of the site had not taken into consideration. This resulted in information being too difficult to find and a decline in the use of the intranet.
The Solution
I led and managed the project for 24 Months from inception up to completion in June 2004. The final result was a revamped user driven interface that was extensively user tested and a reduction of unnecessary and out of date information. The site was also written to the RNIB “see it right” standard.
“ The new design has been praised by many of the business owners and staff within PINS and is a model for government departments and agencies.”
